Sweetened Condensed Milk

Srsly, what is this stuff? I mean, I only have one recipe that calls for it, but I don't enjoy feeding people I like weird things. Anybody seen/come up with a substitution/make-your-own for this goop?

In other news, I'm making up my own potato soup recipe this week. Wish me luck!

  1. You can make your own.
    1.5 cups whole milk
    5-6 ounces sugar
    2.5 tbsp Butter
    .5 tsp vanilla
Mix milk and sugar in saucepan over low heat, stirring until sugar
Is completely dissolved. Once its dissolved and the liquid begins to steam, lower heat to bare simmer until you have reduced it to half volume. Once it reaches the correct volume remove from heat and add butter and vanilla, whisk them in. Let it cool and you're good to go

  2. You're too funny. Sweetened condensed milk is just milk [some H2O taken out] and sugar. There's not much difference in a can of that [other than the can having a BPA lining] and the recipe given above. So don't worry...it's not really weird. Just two simple ingredients and it can make some wonderful desserts!
